Man Arrested in South Yorkshire Connection with Murder of Anne Widdecombe
Police have confirmed the arrest of a 28-year-old man in connection with the murder of 78-year-old Anne Widdecombe, a case described by senior officers as a, "horrific murder of a very prominent public figure".
Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman, leading the investigation for Devon and Cornwall Police, announced during a press briefing that the suspect, a White British man, was taken into custody shortly after 9:00 PM on Saturday, July 11th. The arrest was carried out in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, through a joint operation involving Counter Terrorism Police North East and South Yorkshire Police.
While the involvement of counter-terrorism units was noted, ACC Longman was quick to clarify the current direction of the inquiry.
"At this point, there is still no information to suggest that this is a terrorism-related incident", Longman said. "We retain primacy of this investigation and detectives remain open-minded about the potential motive. At this stage, there is nothing to suggest it was politically motivated".
Police confirmed they are not currently looking for any other suspects in connection with the case.
Ms. Widdecombe’s family has been informed of the breakthrough and is being supported by specialist officers. ACC Longman expressed the force's condolences, stating that their thoughts remain with her friends and family during an, "incredibly difficult time".
A police cordon remains in place at the scene of the crime and is expected to stay for several days as forensic inquiries continue. Residents can expect a heightened police presence in the area over the coming weeks to provide community reassurance, though officials stressed there is no evidence of a wider threat to the public.
The investigation has moved at what the Chief Constable described as a, "lightning pace". Within 48 hours, the force received over 120 reports via their major incident public portal.
"The operation has been running at a lightning pace for 48 hours, and I am really pleased that we have a suspect firmly in custody", the Chief Constable said, praising the, "extraordinary response", from regional and national partners. "This is clearly British policing at its very best".
Both senior officers issued a stern warning against public and online speculation regarding the motive for the killing. ACC Longman urged the public not to engage with rumours, noting that such speculation is, "distressing to the family", and, "does not aid our investigation".
The police are continuing to appeal for information. Anyone with relevant images, footage, or details is encouraged to submit them through the Devon and Cornwall Police major incident portal or to contact Crimestoppers anonymously.
"Progressing and protecting the integrity of our investigation is paramount now", Longman concluded. "We recognise there is still some way to go in this case".
