Kemi Badenoch Hits Out at Issues as Rochdale MP Addresses the Commons About Shabir Ahmed

Conservative Leader of the Opposition Kemi Badenoch has launched a blistering critique of the government’s handling of border control and national preparedness, following revelations that a notorious people smuggler is living and working illegally in Leicestershire.

In a wide-ranging weekend interview, Badenoch addressed the BBC report concerning the smuggler, who is reportedly claiming asylum despite his criminal background. She argued that the case is a symptom of a system being exploited by those who, "think they can take us for mugs".

“We are being taken for mugs”, Badenoch said. “Conservative Party policy is clear: deport all foreign criminals, no ifs, no buts. This is someone who has created multiple crises. A billion pounds of public money is being spent managing the asylum process, and too many people are coming who are not genuine refugees. He needs to be removed”.

The Deportation Debate

Calls for stricter deportation measures were echoed in the House of Commons this week by Rochdale MP Paul Waugh. Waugh highlighted the case of Shabir Ahmed, the ringleader of a notorious grooming gang, who is due for release from prison.

Waugh noted that while Ahmed is restricted from entering Rochdale or Oldham, the dual UK-Pakistani national, Shabir Ahmed, should be deported to Pakistan. “The Home Office and Foreign Office should do everything possible to make sure people like Ahmed are deported and that their victims never ever get to face them again”, Waugh told the House.

The Leader of the House responded by stating the government is, "exploring every option", regarding Ahmed’s deportation, warning that any breach of his strict release conditions would result in immediate re-imprisonment.

A ‘Common Sense’ World Cup

Turning to the upcoming England World Cup fixture, which kicks off at 1 AM UK time, Badenoch called for a, "common sense", approach to licensing and school attendance.

While she supported allowing pubs to stay open late for adults to celebrate, she drew a firm line regarding children missing school the next day.

“Grownups going to the pub is something the government really shouldn’t be interfering with”, she said. “But children should always go to school. I don’t want to see them missing days, especially as summer holidays are coming. Let’s bring back some common sense”.

Labour’s ‘Confession’ and Tory Readiness

Badenoch also seized on comments made by Morgan McSweeney, who admitted in a recent interview that the Labour Party was not fully prepared for power when they entered office.

“I’m glad Morgan McSweeney has finally confessed what we knew all along: that Labour were only preparing to win an election rather than preparing for government”, Badenoch said. She claimed the Conservative Party has spent the last 18 months readying costed policies and a full front-bench team.

She outlined a platform focused on, "getting Britain working again", which includes scrapping net zero targets she claims are, "bankrupting the country", tightening border controls, and moving people off welfare into the workforce.

Royal Security

When asked about Prince Harry’s ongoing legal battles regarding taxpayer-funded security, Badenoch remained guarded.

“I’m His Majesty’s leader of the opposition; I don’t comment on royal matters”, she stated. However, she urged the Home Office to use 'common sense' in their assessment. “Prince Harry is a high-profile member of the royal family, even if he is not a working royal. The Home Office should make the right assessment on what his security needs should be”.

As the political season heats up, Badenoch’s focus on, "common sense", and the, "deportation of foreign criminals", appears to be the cornerstone of the Conservative strategy to reclaim the narrative on national security and public spending.
