Sir Keir Starmer Announces His Resignation

London — In a move that has stunned Westminster and triggered an immediate race for the keys to Number 10, Sir Keir Starmer has announced his resignation as Prime Minister and Leader of the Labour Party.

Speaking from a podium outside Downing Street this morning, a somber Starmer confirmed he would step down after losing the confidence of his parliamentary party. The announcement follows weeks of internal speculation regarding his leadership and a reported breakdown in relations with backbench MPs.

“The question my party is asking now is whether I am best placed to lead us into the next general election”, Starmer told a crowd of journalists and staff. “I have heard the answer of my parliamentary party to that question, and I accept that answer with good grace”.

A Rapid Transition

Starmer confirmed he has already spoken with His Majesty the King to inform him of his decision. To ensure stability, he will remain in post as Prime Minister until a successor is chosen, promising an, "orderly handover of power".

The process to replace him will be swift. The Prime Minister has instructed the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee to open nominations on July 9th, with the goal of concluding the leadership contest before the parliamentary summer recess. This timeline would see a new prime minister in place before parliament returns in September.

Defending His Legacy

Throughout his resignation speech, Starmer remained defiant regarding his record in office. Having served as Prime Minister for two years, he claimed he was leaving the country in a better state than he found it.

“I will give my successor my full and unequivocal support, knowing that they will inherit a Britain that is far stronger and fairer than the one I inherited two years ago”, he said. He added that the country is now, “better prepared for the challenges ahead”, and expressed confidence that the Labour Party remains well-positioned to secure a second term.

Starmer took a moment to thank his staff at Number 10 and the Civil Service, as well as the colleagues who have supported him over the last six years, dating back to his time as Leader of the Opposition.

A Personal Farewell The speech concluded on a deeply personal note. Starmer, who has often sought to protect his family’s privacy while in high office, credited his wife, Victoria, as his, “rock through good times and bad”.

“When I leave the biggest job in the country, I shall spend more time on the most important job”, he said. “Being the best husband I can to my fantastic wife, Vic… and being the best dad I can to my beautiful children who are my pride and my joy”.

The Road Ahead

The resignation marks a volatile turning point for the Labour government. While Starmer’s departure aims to heal the rift within the Parliamentary Labour Party, it opens a power vacuum at the heart of government.

Potential frontrunners for the leadership are expected to emerge over the coming days, including Wes Streeting and Andy Burnham, as the party prepares for a condensed and high-stakes campaign. For now, the outgoing prime minister insists his focus remains on a smooth transition, even as the political landscape he leaves behind remains deeply uncertain.
