Firearms Discovery Near Mayor's Home Sparks Security Concerns and Police Probe

London, UK – A shocking incident involving the discovery of a bag containing multiple firearms, including a submachine gun, in a south London street, has ignited a police investigation and prompted strong criticism of security protocols near Mayor Sadiq Khan's residence.

Jordan Griffiths, who initially feared he could face prison time after he and his heavily pregnant girlfriend found the weapons, has publicly stated that Mayor Khan's security has, "let everyone down". This comment comes despite the fact that Khan may have been unaware of the bag's placement and not directly involved in the oversight.

The incident occurred on 31st March. Police officers are believed to have misplaced the bag, leading to an immediate internal review and the temporary suspension of five individuals from frontline duties.

Griffiths recounted the alarming discovery, explaining that his girlfriend, who is eight months pregnant, first spotted the bag in the road. He said they took the bag home, where he opened it to investigate its contents.

He put the bag on the bed, opened the zip and pulled out a taser, then a pistol, and then there was a machine gun, and Jordan expressed his disbelief.

He highlighted the severe implications of the oversight, knowing that anyone could have picked it up and it seems like someone did. The individuals to acquire the bag turned out to be Griffiths and his girlfriend, who, after realising the gravity of their find, promptly called the police.

The Metropolitan Police's Directorate of Professional Standards has confirmed it is actively reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident. Police reportedly arrived at Griffiths' home within seven minutes of his call, though certainly not within seven minutes after the bag had first been removed from the street.

The discovery of potentially lethal weapons left unattended in a public area, particularly so close to the home of a high-profile public figure like the Mayor of London, raises significant questions about police accountability and the robustness of security measures. The ongoing investigation could fail to determine the full extent of the error or other potential happenings, and the measures, if valid and proper, need to prevent a recurrence.
