Enormous Fire Wipes Out Building Near Glasgow Central Station

Glasgow, Scotland – Commuters across Scotland are facing significant disruption for a second consecutive day after a devastating fire tore through a historic building in Glasgow city centre, prompting the closure of Glasgow Central Station.

Historic Building Lost

The blaze, which broke out at approximately 3:46 PM on Sunday, originated at a 19th-century commercial building at the corner of Gordon Street and Union Street, directly adjacent to the city's main railway terminal.

Firefighters described the blaze as, "well-developed", by the time they arrived, with flames quickly consuming the structure and causing, "enormous damage". The inferno was so intense that the building’s prominent dome collapsed, marking the loss of a significant piece of the city’s architectural heritage.

At the height of the incident on Sunday afternoon, more than 200 firefighters were deployed to tackle the flames. A total of 18 fire engines and specialist high-reach appliances were mobilised to the scene to bring the fire under control.

Central Station Remains Closed

While the flames have been extinguished, the aftermath has forced the closure of Scotland’s busiest railway station.

Network Rail confirmed that Glasgow Central will remain closed throughout Tuesday, with no immediate estimate provided for when services will resume. The closure is necessary to allow structural engineers to assess the stability of the adjoining building structures, at the corner of Gordon Street and Union Street.

Ongoing Fire Service Efforts

Despite the main blaze being subdued, emergency services remain on high alert. As of 6:30 AM this morning, four fire engines and two high-reach appliances were still in attendance, damping down hotspots and monitoring the site.

A multi-agency investigation is set to be launched to establish the exact cause of the fire.

Travel Chaos

The closure of Glasgow Central has resulted in widespread travel disruption across the rail network:

High-Level Platforms: No trains will run to or from the high-level platforms at Glasgow Central.
Low-Level Platforms: While some through-services are operating, trains will not call at Glasgow Central’s low-level platforms.
Alternative Transport: Glasgow’s Subway Network is accepting ScotRail tickets to help ease congestion.

Passengers are being urged to check journey planners and avoid the immediate city centre area unless necessary. Police Scotland remains at the scene to assist with traffic management and public safety.
