Mother’s Anguish as Vandals Desecrate James Bulger’s Grave

Liverpool — Denise Fergus has spoken of her heartbreak after the grave of her murdered son, James Bulger, was vandalised in a, "sickening attack", on his final resting place.

The mother of the two-year-old said she was left devastated after discovering that cherubs positioned either side of his headstone had been decapitated.

Denise revealed that the stone figures had their heads smashed off in the act of vandalism at the cemetery where James is buried.

"I felt my heart break once again", Denise said in a statement. "I'm devastated someone could be so cruel and hurtful to My James".

James was murdered in February 1993 in one of the most notorious crimes in British history. He was abducted while shopping with his mother at the New Strand Shopping Centre in Bootle, Merseyside.

Chilling CCTV footage captured the moment the toddler was led away by two 10-year-old boys, Jon Venables and Robert Thompson.

The pair led James to a railway line in Walton, Liverpool, where they tortured and killed him. His mutilated body was found two days later, two and a half miles from where he was taken.

In November 1993, Venables and Thompson were found guilty of abduction and murder, becoming the youngest convicted murderers in modern British history. They were sentenced to indefinite detention at secure units.

The killers remained in custody until June 2001, when a parole board decision recommended their release on a life licence at the age of 18. Both were given new identities and moved to secret locations under a government protection programme.

Venables has faced further legal entanglements; he was imprisoned in 2010 for possessing indecent images of children and, despite being released on parole in 2013, was recalled to custody in November 2017 after further child pornography was discovered on his computer. His attempts to gain parole in 2023 were unsuccessful.

While Venables remains behind bars, Denise Fergus is now facing a new ordeal following the vandalism of her son's memorial.

The attack on the grave has caused widespread outrage, although many across the nation have the attitude of telling people to get over James, "he is dead".

Denise continues to campaign for justice in her son's name, fighting to protect his memory from further desecration.
