Three Teenage Girls Jailed for ‘Sickening’ Unprovoked Killing of Pensioner

London – Three schoolgirls who surrounded, filmed, and brutally beat a 75-year-old man to death in a North London street have been jailed for a total of nine years.

Fredi Rivero, a grandfather on his way to meet friends at a pub, died from a catastrophic head injury after being punched, kicked, and pushed to the pavement outside a McDonald’s in Islington last February.

A 15-year-old girl, her 17-year-old sister, and another 17-year-old girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were sentenced today after previously pleading guilty to manslaughter.

In a heart-wrenching victim impact statement read to the court, Mr. Rivero’s daughter, Carla, condemned the senseless violence. "It wasn't my dad's time to die. His death was forced upon him by three girls", she said. "They demonstrated no consideration or respect for an elderly person. He was an ill elderly person who would never hurt anyone".

The court heard that the attack began after the three teenagers, who were described as unsteady on their feet with one clutching an empty vodka bottle, got off a bus and surrounded Mr. Rivero near a bus stop.

CCTV footage showed the girls brushing past the pensioner. In response, Mr. Rivero put his hands up in a peace sign and began to walk backwards as the teens aggressively advanced on him. They then launched their vicious assault, punching and kicking him and snatching his glasses from his face.

The attack was filmed on a mobile phone by one of the girls. In the chilling footage, she could be heard taunting Mr. Rivero, shouting, "I don’t care", and, "why are you chatting to little girls bruv". She then dared him, "Hit me, I f***ing dare you", before the older girl delivered a final punch that sent the elderly man crashing to the ground.

The girls’ bravado turned to panic as Mr. Rivero lay bleeding. They were heard shouting, "chill", and, "relax", before one screamed, "Oh my God", upon seeing blood. The group then fled, shouting at each other to, "get out", and exclaiming, "Oh my God he’s dead".

Mr. Rivero was found unconscious by passers-by and rushed to hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries the following day.

Prosecutor Louise Oakley dismissed any claims of provocation, telling the court: "The Crown don’t accept this incident was provoked by anything the victim did. The Crown’s case is this was unprovoked violence on the street at night under the influence of drink". Bystanders also confirmed that Mr. Rivero did not appear to have done anything to warrant the attack.

When police arrested one of the 17-year-olds at her home, they overheard her discussing, "destroying evidence", with her father. Blood-stained clothing was later discovered in the washing machine.

During her arrest, the same girl attempted to shift blame while expressing remorse laced with self-pity. "If he dies am I going to jail?… I didn’t do nothing to him", she said. "My New Year’s resolution was not to get arrested this year, it’s already done, it’s not even f*ing March... He just looked so dead. I was like what the fk I just killed someone".

The court was told that two of the girls had previous convictions for violence. One 17-year-old had been convicted of assaults on emergency workers, while the youngest girl, who was 14 at the time of the killing, had a previous conviction for attempted grievous bodily harm against a homeless woman in an attack that was also filmed.

The 15-year-old was sentenced to two years and six months. One 17-year-old received a sentence of three years and six months, and the other was jailed for four years. The judge denied a request to lift their anonymity, citing their, "unusually traumatic upbringings and life experiences".

Detective Inspector Devan Taylor of the Met Police described the killing as sickening. "This was a completely unprovoked attack by three teenage girls on an elderly man who was just going about his day. The fact they filmed the attack and found it funny is even more sickening", he said. "I would like to send my deepest condolences to Fredi's family, they have showed remarkable strength throughout this horrible ordeal and are a testament to his memory".
