Ricky Hatton, British Boxing Legend, Dies Aged 46

Hyde, Greater Manchester – Ricky Hatton, the beloved former two-weight world champion and one of the most popular British fighters in history, has died at the age of 46.

The retired boxer was found dead at his home on Bowlacre Road in Hyde, Tameside, on Sunday morning.

Greater Manchester Police have confirmed they are not treating the death as suspicious. A spokesperson said: "Officers were called by a member of the public to attend Bowlacre Road, Hyde, Tameside, at 6:45 AM today where they found the body of a 46-year-old man. There are not currently believed to be any suspicious circumstances".

The news has sent shockwaves through the world of sport, where Hatton was revered for his ferocious, all-action style and his down-to-earth connection with a legion of devoted fans.

Poignantly, the Manchester icon had been training for a return to the ring, with a comeback fight scheduled for this December.

Hatton’s stellar 15-year professional career, which ran from 1997 to 2012, saw him capture multiple world championships. His crowning moment came on a thunderous night in June 2005 at the MEN Arena in his hometown, where he dethroned the formidable Kostya Tszyu to win the IBF super-lightweight world title in one of the greatest victories in British boxing history.

Known as 'The Hitman', his relentless body punching and pressure-fighting style won him the WBA title in the same division, and he later stepped up to welterweight to defeat Luis Collazo for the WBA world title in 2006.

Hatton’s immense popularity was never more evident than when he led his famous ‘Barmy Army’ of thousands of singing fans to Las Vegas for mega-fights against two of the sport’s all-time greats. He bravely challenged Floyd Mayweather in 2007, suffering his first professional defeat, and later faced Manny Pacquiao in 2009.

Despite these losses, Hatton remained the people's champion, a working-class hero who never lost his everyman appeal. He initially retired in 2011 before making a brief comeback in 2012.

Tributes are expected to pour in for a fighter who transcended the sport, creating unforgettable nights and leaving behind a legacy as a true warrior and a cherished British sporting hero.
