Elderly Woman Killed in Recycling Lorry Tragedy in Llandudno

Llandudno, North Wales — An inquest has heard how an 89-year-old woman was killed after being struck by a recycling lorry reversing down a narrow street in the seaside town of Llandudno.

Daphne Stallard was discovered lying in the road on September 1st following the collision. Emergency services attended, but the grandmother was pronounced dead at the scene. A post-mortem examination revealed she had sustained severe crush injuries to her chest.

The vehicle involved, a white DAF lorry operated by Conwy County Borough Council, was cordoned off by police shortly after the incident. A council employee was subsequently arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving but has since been released pending further investigation.

North Wales Police confirmed that enquiries are ongoing. Conwy County Borough Council said in a statement: “Our thoughts are with the lady’s family and friends. The circumstances surrounding the collision are currently being investigated by North Wales Police, and the Authority is assisting with those enquiries”.

At a brief hearing, the coroner adjourned the inquest to a later date to allow police investigations to progress.

Mrs Stallard, who lived locally, was well known in her community and remained active in the Holy Trinity Junior Church, despite her age. She was the widow of Reverend Charles Stallard and the mother of Mary Stallard, Bishop of Llandaff in Cardiff, who was among the first women to be ordained in the Church in Wales.

Her family described her as a, “shining light of love”, while the Reverend Mike Harrison of Llandudno paid tribute, calling her, “a remarkable woman”. Fellow worshippers also expressed their sorrow, describing her as a, “lovely lady”, and a, “wonderful woman”.

The adjourned inquest will reconvene at a future date once investigations by both police and the local authority are complete.
