Woodbank Cricket Club in Bury, Greater Manchester, Rallies for Local Family with Lager Festival

Bury, Greater Manchester – A local cricket club is rallying around one of its own this bank holiday, hosting its first-ever ‘Lager Cricket Festival’ to raise funds for a local man living with motor neurone disease (MND).

Woodbank Cricket Club, based on Stafford Street in Brandlesholme, Bury, Greater Manchester, is holding the community event on Bank Holiday Monday in aid of the Minor family. Paul Minor, a former firefighter and military serviceman, was diagnosed with the progressive condition in July 2022. MND affects the brain and spinal cord, gradually limiting his mobility and independence.

The funds raised will go towards vital adaptations for the family's home. While specialist charities are providing support, a significant shortfall remains, which prompted his wife Nicola to launch an online fundraiser earlier this year. The connection to the club is a personal one, as the Minor family's children are active players in its youth sections.

The festival follows the success of the club’s Prosecco Cricket event held earlier in the year. This new event will see teams of men, most of whom have never played cricket before, competing in a friendly match. The day is being eagerly anticipated by members and players, with Barry Kitchen, Steve Schofield, Wayne Jackson and Woodbank first team captain Lewis Dove all looking forward to the community coming together.

The Lager Cricket Festival is set to take place on Bank Holiday Monday, starting at 1 PM. Teams of six can register for £30, with the main rule being that participants must be men aged 18 or over with no previous cricket experience.

Alongside the on-pitch action, the club will host food stalls, a tombola, and a range of family games. All proceeds from the day’s activities will go directly to support the Minor family.
