Tributes Pour In for Dad-of-Three Who Died on Snowdon's Crib Goch Ridge

Tributes have flooded in for Tom Smith, a 36-year-old father-of-three from Bolton, who tragically died after falling from the notorious Crib Goch ridge on Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) on Saturday, August 16th.

Mr. Smith, a plasterer, was climbing the challenging Crib Goch route, a section notorious for its exposure and requires significant scrambling, when he suffered a fatal fall at approximately 11:30 AM. He was en route to the summit of Yr Wyddfa, the highest mountain in Wales.

Emergency services, including Llanberis Mountain Rescue, were dispatched to the scene. Despite their desperate efforts, Mr. Smith was airlifted from the mountain but tragically passed away from, "multiple injuries due to a fall from a height", before he could receive further medical treatment.

To honour Mr. Smith and support the mountain rescue team who attended the incident, his family has established a JustGiving page for donations. A service to celebrate his life will be held next week, with the procession planned to travel along one of his favourite running routes before concluding at a local church.

An inquest in Caernarfon on Wednesday heard that Mr. Smith had travelled to Wales on the morning of his death. A post-mortem examination confirmed the cause of death as multiple injuries. The inquest has been adjourned pending further investigations.

Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) is the UK's most popular mountain, attracting over 750,000 visitors annually, with numbers surging in recent years. While it is a beloved destination, its popularity also means it sees an average of eight fatalities per year. The Crib Goch ridge, in particular, is considered the most perilous route to the summit, demanding a good head for heights, steady balance, and favourable weather conditions. This dangerous section typically accounts for one to three deaths annually. This year alone, seven walkers have tragically lost their lives on the mountain range.
