Man Dies After Car Plunges Down Embankment Onto Harrogate Railway Line

Harrogate – A man in his 70s has tragically died after his car veered off a road and slid down an embankment onto busy railway tracks in Harrogate on Friday afternoon.

Emergency services, including North Yorkshire Police, were alerted to reports of a car on the railway line close to Stray Rein at 3:19 PM on Friday.


Officers arriving at the scene discovered a silver VW Golf on the tracks with the driver still inside. Despite the swift and dedicated efforts of emergency crews, the man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigations by North Yorkshire Police have revealed that the vehicle had been travelling on York Place before it left the road and plunged down the railway embankment.

The identity of the deceased has not yet been released, but police confirmed his family is being supported by specialist officers during this difficult time.

North Yorkshire Police is appealing for any witnesses who may have seen the silver VW Golf travelling on York Place or leaving the road. They are also asking anyone with dashcam footage taken in the area around the time of the incident to come forward to assist with their ongoing investigation.
