Divorced Mum Ordered to Pay £80,000 for Ex-Husband's Gender Swap Surgery
A 60-year-old mother of two has been shocked by a court ruling that she must contribute £80,000 towards her ex-husband's gender reassignment surgery, despite claiming that his decision to transition was the reason for their marriage breakdown.
The couple, who married in 2002 and enjoyed an international lifestyle, purchasing properties in various countries, separated in 2022 after the husband revealed his desire to undergo hormone therapy. The wife, who had been unaware of her husband's wish to transition until then, filed for divorce, citing his decision as the cause of the breakdown.
However, a judge at Brighton Family Court ruled that the husband's transition was a 'need' rather than a 'whim', and that it was 'reasonable' for the cost to be shared between the couple. The husband, 58, had already spent £160,000 on the transition in 2024, using funds from their £3 million joint pot, despite being separated for two years.
The wife argued that it was unfair to expect her to contribute to the surgery, given that her husband's decision had led to the end of their marriage. However, the husband claimed that his wife had 'always known' about his trans identity and compared his need for surgery to someone requiring treatment for cancer.
The court's decision has been made despite the husband's questionable financial management, including spending £14,000 of shared funds in a single month on 'clothing, nails, jewellery, and restaurants'. He also claimed to be unable to afford child support.
The court battle between the couple has racked up an astonishing £1 million in legal fees. The judge acknowledged that the husband had 'shown no understanding' of how his decision affected others, displaying a 'striking lack of empathy'. Nevertheless, the ruling has left the wife outraged, and the case has raised questions about the financial implications of divorce and the treatment of shared assets in such circumstances.
