Rochdale Drug Dealer Who 'Thought He Was Untouchable' Brought Down by Text Messages

Rochdale, UK - A string of text messages found on three mobile phones has led to the conviction of Usman Alam, a Rochdale drug dealer described as believing he was "untouchable." The 36-year-old was sentenced to six years and three months in jail at Manchester Crown Court on June 16th.

The downfall of Alam began on January 5, 2022, when officers from Greater Manchester Police (GMP) raided his home on Law Street, Rochdale. The raid uncovered cannabis, weighing scales, and the three crucial mobile phones.

According to GMP, the phones contained a "wealth of evidence that showed overwhelmingly" Alam's involvement in the supply of both cocaine and cannabis over a four-year period, dating back to 2018. Analysis of the text messages revealed a sophisticated drug operation, involving the supply of a "wholesale amount" of cocaine and the production of cannabis across England. The messages also implicated Alam in street-level drug dealing throughout Greater Manchester.

Further investigation revealed that Alam's bank account had received between £300,000 and £400,000, with no evidence of any legitimate wages being received.

But the drug dealing was not Alam's only crime. In 2024, he stabbed and assaulted a man who was dealing drugs on his behalf, accusing him of stealing cannabis following a prior theft. Alam headbutted the victim before repeatedly striking him with the handle of a knife, causing cuts and lacerations. Later that same day, Alam threatened to "shoot" everyone and "bomb houses" belonging to family members associated with the victim.

Alam pleaded guilty at Manchester Crown Court to being concerned in the supply of cocaine, being concerned in the supply of cannabis, and possession of cannabis with intent to supply. He also pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent, under section 20 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861, and making threats to kill in connection with the 2024 incident.

The sentencing marks the end of Alam's criminal enterprise and sends a clear message that GMP is committed to tackling drug crime and holding offenders accountable for their actions.
