Millions of Pounds Allocated to Launch Live Well Centres Across Greater Manchester

In a major development, Manchester Evening News' Local Democracy Reporting Service has learned that Live Well centres are set to become a reality in every part of Greater Manchester. The initiative, championed by Mayor Andy Burnham, aims to revolutionise the way employment support is delivered in the region.



A funding allocation of millions of pounds from the Combined Authority and NHS Greater Manchester will kick-start the development of GM Live Well, paving the way for the creation of physical centres on high streets in Greater Manchester districts. This investment comes on top of a £10m government grant awarded last year to reform employment support in the region.

The Live Well centres will offer comprehensive support to residents, bringing together voluntary and community organisations to tackle a range of issues, including housing, health, and employment. According to Mayor Burnham, the existing Job Centre model is insufficient, and a "radical rewiring" of service delivery is necessary to reduce the strain on the public sector.

Mayor Burnham emphasised that we need a paradigm shift, not just a rebranding exercise, echoing his previous comments to the Department for Work and Pensions' select committee. The Live Well centres should provide tailored support to jobseekers, addressing the complex issues that can hinder their journey back to employment.

The allocated funding will be used to develop the GM Live Well programme, with a focus on providing personalised support to jobseekers. While a specific time-frame for the opening of the centres has not been announced, the investment marks a significant step towards transforming employment support in Greater Manchester.

By integrating health, housing, and employment services under one roof, the Live Well centres aim to provide a more holistic approach to supporting residents. As Mayor Burnham noted, this innovative approach is essential to reducing unemployment rates and promoting economic growth in the region.

The launch of GM Live Well centres is a major development in Greater Manchester's efforts to create a more supportive and inclusive environment for residents.
